Marvels of the World #2

Hi, guys! Today, I wanted to talk about the background of yet another iconic landmark of the world, which is the Sydney Opera House.

In the modern world, the Opera House in Sydney is recognized globally and is an iconic example of architecture; however, the way from conception to completion was rather difficult. At the end of the 1950s, Australia required the construction of a facility where it would be possible to present performing arts to attract attention of the whole world. For this reason, the country organized an international contest, and Jørn Utzon – Danish architect – proposed his project. According to it, several large shells should appear in Sydney Harbour, which would represent sails that caught a breeze. As a result, it was extremely difficult to construct this building since engineers developed many new technologies of its construction for several years. Moreover, problems with funding and political disputes resulted in the departure of Utzon.

Nevertheless, Sydney Opera House was finally constructed in 1973 and became an important landmark. It is an embodiment of creativity that can be presented by the architectural construction that is very unusual in its design. Thus, it was demonstrated that architectural projects should be not only functional but also impressive and beautiful. Moreover, architects received an opportunity to develop unconventional ideas.

Over 50 years after opening, the Sydney Opera House has greatly impacted architectural design throughout the world. The Opera House has shown that bold ideas can be pursued regardless of how ambitious or difficult they may seem. Also, the Opera House brought together three different disciplines (artistry, engineering, and creativity) in a way that no other structure had done in modern times, redefining architectural possibilities for future architects and encouraging generations to think bigger.

Honestly, this is one of the main things that pushed the field of architecture further, and it was a great reference for me to use when working on my pavilion project, in which one of the options I was considering was a performing area.
