Just to clarify: this is NOT the only path you can take in order to become an architect, but it is the most common one.
Step 1: Get a Degree in Architecture
The first step is going to school for architecture. You need a degree approved by the National Architectural Accrediting Board (NAAB) to become licensed later.
There are two main types of degrees:
Bachelor of Architecture (B.Arch): A 5-year program for students starting right after high school.
OR
Master of Architecture (M.Arch): A 2–3 year program for students who already have a college degree in another subject.
In school, you’ll learn about design, history, structures, materials, and technology. You’ll also use design software like AutoCAD, Revit, and Rhino to create digital models and drawings.
Step 2: Get Work Experience (AXP)
After finishing school, you’ll need real-world experience through the Architectural Experience Program (AXP), run by NCARB (National Council of Architectural Registration Boards).
You must complete 3,740 hours of work under a licensed architect. These hours cover different parts of the job, such as:
Managing projects
Designing and planning buildings
Working on construction and documentation
This helps you apply your skills to the real world and understand the role architecture plays there
Step 3: Pass the Architect Registration Exam (ARE)
Next, you need to pass the Architect Registration Examination (ARE). This exam has six parts that test what you’ve learned — from designing buildings to handling construction details. This is generally considered the hardest part in the journey to becoming an architect, and you cannot legally be called an architect without finishing this exam.
The steps I just said are NOT the only way to become a licensed architect. You could go to a 5-year architecture program offered at numerous schools across the nation, or even gain technical experience and take the test. However, the work experience and the ARE are required in order for you to become a licensed architect.
